Visiting Borussia Dortmund dominated Zenit St. Petersburg 4-2 Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 faceoff.
Last year's Champions runner-up led 2-0 just five minutes into the contest at St. Petersburg's Petrovski stadium, thanks to goals by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marco Reus.
The Russian side had to play without two of their top performers, Danny and Shirokov, who remain sidelined with injuries, while Dortmund was energized by the return to the lineup of Reus and Robert Lewandowski.
Things went a little better for Zenit in the second half and the home side cut Dortmund's lead in half in the 57th minute, when Oleg Shatov scored after the visiting goalkeeper stopped successive shots by Jose Rondon.
Lewandowski replied for Dortmund four minutes later after trading passes with fellow Polish international Lukasz Piszczek.
A subsequent foul by Piszczek on Viktor Fayzulin set up Zenit's second goal, as Brazil's Hulk converted the penalty in the 69th minute.
Yet again, Lewandowski rose to the challenge, making it 4-2 in the 71st minute.
The second leg will be played March 19 in Dortmund.
Manchester United lost away 2-0 to Olympiakos in Tuesday's other Champions League fixture. EFE
