The Seattle Seahawks crushed the Denver Broncos 43-8 in Super Bowl XLVIII, winning the first NFL championship in franchise history.
"This one is for all time," Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said. "The first time in 35 years that Seattle has owned a world championship."
The Seahawks' smothering defense kept Broncos star quarterback Peyton Manning off balance all night.
"I think we played a great football team. We needed to play really well in order to win and we just didn't come anywhere close to that. We weren't sharp offensively from the very get-go. The turnover on the first play of the game, giving them a safety - not the way you want to start a game. For whatever reason, we couldn't get much going after that," Manning said.
Seattle linebacker Malcolm Smith, who interceped one of Manning's passes and returned it for a touchdown, was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.
The 37-year-old Manning had one of his worst post-season performances on Sunday, a day after winning his fifth NFL Most Valuable Player award
"Well, it's disappointing for our entire team. We worked hard to get to this point. Overcame a lot of obstacles to be here. Put in a lot of hard work, did some really good things just to have this opportunity. But certainly to finish this way, it's very disappointing. It's not an easy pill to swallow, but eventually we have to," Manning said.
Seattle's defense kept the pressure on the veteran quarterback throughout the game, forcing Manning to make errant throws and affecting the time with his receivers.
The Seahawks offense managed to run the ball and quarterback Russell Wilson completed passes at key points in the game, keep drives alive.
The 61-year-old Carroll became the third head coach to win both a college football championship and a Super Bowl.
Carroll won two national championships as the head coach of the University of Southern California Trojans.
"We have done everything the way we wanted to get it done," Carroll said. "I'm so proud that we were able to stay together right here at this moment. You built on all the things we believed in and you guys never backed off. You kept believing you kept fighting you kept clawing and scratching and look what you freakin' did." EFE
