Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro defeated Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 Tuesday in the second round of the Apia International tournament in Sydney, Australia.
The next opponent for Suarez Navarro, who is seeded 11th at the tournament, will be Germany's Angelique Kerber in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Kerber, the No. 5 seed, beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.
The 25-year-old Suarez Navarro, who is ranked 16th in the world, is the highest-ranked Spanish women's tennis player.
In other women's action at the Apia International, the Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova knocked off Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, the No. 6 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), while American Bethanie Mattek-Sands beat Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska, the top seed, 7-5, 6-2.
The world's top tennis players are gearing up for the Australian Open, the tennis season's first Grand Slam event, which begins on Jan. 13.
