Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is expected to be out for six months after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Germany in an international friendly in Milan.

Sources with the German national soccer team said Saturday that the 26-year-old star tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Friday night during a match against Italy, a contest that ended in a 1-1 draw.

The injury could end his 2013-14 season as a member of Real Madrid and jeopardizes his chances of competing for Germany in next year's World Cup.

Khedira had to be helped off the field after injuring his knee while trying to make a defensive play against midfielder Andrea Pirlo at the San Siro.

The player was treated by German national team physician Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfarth, who on Saturday confirmed the extent of the injury. EFE
