Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro defeated Switzerland's Roger Federer 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-4 Sunday in the final of the Swiss Indoors in Basel.

The final was a repeat of last year's championship match.

The 25-year-old Del Potro used a powerful service game and excellent baseline play to beat the 32-year-old Federer, who is a five-time champion at his hometown tournament and still has a 13-5 lifetime record against the Argentine.

Federer, the world No. 6, is trying to make it into the eight-man field for the year-end ATP World Tour Finals for the 12th straight year.

The Swiss great, winner of a record 17 Grand Slam men's singles titles, has been struggling in the past few months and parted ways with his coach, American Paul Annacone, earlier this month.

Del Potro has now won four titles this season, having earlier captured the winner's trophy at events in Rotterdam, Washington and Tokyo. EFE
