BERLIN – The U.S. Soccer Federation says midfielder Jermaine Jones will not be having knee surgery this week.
After Schalke allowed a pair of second-half goals in a 3-3 tie against Hoffenheim on Saturday in the Bundesliga , the club said Jones would not be on the roster for Tuesday's Champions League match at Basel.
Sport Bild quoted Jones as saying he would have surgery to repair a problem with a meniscus in a knee.
The U.S. Soccer Federation issued a statement from Jones on Monday in which he said ''I have had some minor issues with my knee for a while, and the plan is to take care of it during the winter break,''
''Playing is obviously no problem. I will be in the team this weekend for the game against Augsburg and I'm ready to go for the national team if I get called in.''
Jones helped the U.S. qualify for its seventh straight World Cup.
