Pedro Rodriguez scored three goals and Cesc Fabregas added another to lead FC Barcelona to a 4-0 victory here Saturday over Rayo Vallecano, which battled valiantly against a more talented rival.
The game remained scoreless throughout most of the first half, as Rayo bravely fought for possession against the reigning Spanish league champions.
In the 33rd minute, however, Barça super-striker Lionel Messi beat a trio of defenders and dished off to Pedro, who slotted the ball home from the right side.
Four minutes later, however, Blaugrana defenseman Adriano knocked down Roberto Transhorras in the area to gift the Madrid side a penalty opportunity, which the midfielder failed to convert.
Pedro then got his second goal shortly after the start of the second half, separating himself from his defender and scoring off a perfectly placed cross from Cesc Fabregas.
Brazilian sensation Neymar also wreaked havoc on Rayo Vallecano's defense in the second half, unselfishly passing off to Pedro for a tap-in goal in the 71st minute instead of attempting his own shot against net minder Ruben Martinez.
Fabregas then put the icing on the cake with one final goal off a pass from Xavi Hernandez in the 79th minute.
With the win, Barcelona stayed perfect through five games of the 2013-2014 La Liga season and leads the standings with 15 points.
Rayo won its first match of the season, but has since been outscored 16-1 during its current four-game losing streak. EFE
