Atletico Madrid has extended Turkish winger Arda Turan's contract for two years, locking him up through the end of the 2016-2017 season, the club said Thursday.
The 26-year-old Turan, whose contract had been due to expire in 2015, has become a key element in head coach Diego Simeone's system and been crucial to the Madrid club's recent success.
The Turkish international has been with the team since the start of the 2011-2012 season and helped lead it to Europa League, Super Cup and Copa del Rey titles.
"I feel very happy to have extended my contract with Atletico. After two years with Atletico, I feel like part of the family which is the club," Turan said in a statement on the team's Web site."
"If I'm so happy at the club, it's because my teammates are so strong and we're all in this together. I want to thank not only my colleagues but (also) the coaches and all those who work at the club because they all form this big family."
The contract extension was announced just hours after Atletico Madrid kicked off its Champions League campaign with a 3-1 home victory Wednesday over Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Turan played a key role in the win, scoring the goal that broke a 1-1 tie. EFE
