St. Etienne went to the top of Ligue 1 after beating Valenciennes 3-1 on Saturday night.
Two goals from Benjamin Corgnet, who scored either side of a 25-yard strike from Romain Hamouma, saw the visitors win well. they were denied a clean sheet only by an 80th-minute penalty from substitute Maor Melikson.
Corgnet opened the scoring after 17 minutes, Hamouma doubled the lead in the 47th minute, and six minutes later Corgnet netted again.
Unbeaten Monaco have the opportunity on Sunday to reclaim first place when they tackle Lorient .
St. Etienne have 12 points from five games, Paris St Germain have 11, and Monaco - with their game in hand - now have Marseille alongside them on 10.
Lucas Mendes snatched a late equaliser for Marseille at Toulouse , earning a 1-1 draw. He netted in the 87th minute, with Wissam Ben Yedder having put the home side ahead after 66 minutes.
Toulouse remain winless after five games, as do Sochaux who lost 1-0 at Nantes , where Filip Djordjevic scored the only goal in the 76th minute.
