Iker Casillas has been chosen as Real Madrid's goalkeeper for its opening Champions League match Tuesday in Istanbul against Galatasaray.
"On Tuesday, Casillas will play in the European Cup. So the issue can be put more to rest," head coach Carlo Ancelotti said Friday of his decision to make Diego Lopez his starting net minder for Spanish-league matches and Casillas for Champions League contests.
Casillas, the team's captain and five-time winner of the IFFHS Best Goalkeeper Award, has not played an official match for Real Madrid since Jan. 23, when he broke his left hand in a collision with teammate Alvaro Arbeloa during a game against Valencia.
The player had a public spat with former coach Jose Mourinho, who left him on the bench even after he had made a full recovery.
Since Ancelotti's arrival this summer, Casillas shared pre-season duties with Lopez and was the starter for Real Madrid in a pair of friendly tournaments.
He also manned the goal for Spain in its 2-0 victory over Finland in a World Cup qualifier last Friday. EFE
