Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo has decided not to travel to the UEFA awards gala in Monaco and instead will take part in Thursday's Teresa Herrera Trophy, a friendly hosted by fellow Spanish-league club Deportivo de La Coruña.

Although the Portuguese international had been given permission to travel to the awards show, in which he is one of three Best Player in Europe nominees along with FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery, Ronaldo decided to remain with his teammates.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti is expected to use the friendly to give minutes to goalkeeper Iker Casillas, a one-time fixture in Real Madrid's starting line-up who has been relegated to the second string behind Diego Lopez.

He also will likely provide playing time to Brazilian forward Kaka, who, like Casillas, has ridden the bench for Real Madrid's first two matches of the 2013-2014 La Liga season.

Several injured players - Xabi Alonso, Raphael Varane, Sami Khedira, Denis Cheryshev and Jesus Fernandez - will not make the trip to Galicia.

Ancelotti also will rest a pair of healthy starters, Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric, who are expected to be back in action for Real Madrid's next league match Sunday against Athletic Bilbao. EFE
