Madrid Mayor Ana Botella said Wednesday that the city stood out as a "solid, capable and solvent" option for hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Her remarks come exactly a month before the members of the International Olympic Committee select either Tokyo, Istanbul or Madrid as host city of that year's Games.
The decision will be made at an IOC meeting on Sept. 7 in Buenos Aires.
"Our city wants these games and we're capable of organizing them. (The) Madrid 2020 (bid) is born out of the city itself," she said here at a promotional event for the city's candidacy.
The mayor said that, since the dossier of Madrid's candidacy was presented 19 months ago, "popular support has steadily risen" and more than 45,000 volunteers have signed up to work on this Olympic project.
Botella urged the city's inhabitants to help convey the reasons why Madrid should host the Games, saying "each Madrileño and each Spaniard is another member of Madrid 2020." EFE
