Spain's Feliciano Lopez cruised into the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open in Gstaad with a 6-4, 6-3 victory Wednesday over Russian Andrey Kuznetsov.

The fifth-seeded Spaniard struck nine aces and staved off the lone break point he faced during the contest, which lasted just over an hour.

He also took full advantage of his chances against the 82nd-ranked Russian's serve, converting the one break-point opportunity he created in each set.

Next up for the 29th-ranked Spaniard in the final eight of this clay-court event will be the winner of a match late Wednesday afternoon pitting his countryman, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, against second-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

Earlier Wednesday, Argentina's Juan Monaco, the No. 4 seed, trounced Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2 and Russia's Mikhail Youzhny overcame yet another Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Switzerland's Roger Federer, the top seed in Gstaad, will square off against Germany's Daniel Brands in his opening match on Thursday. EFE
