Spain's Fernando Verdasco narrowly defeated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-5 on Saturday to reach the final of the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad, and will play for the title against Argentina's Carlos Berlocq.
The 29-year-old Verdasco has breathed fresh life into his tennis in recent weeks thanks to the help of new coach Ricardo Sanchez, who started working with the 35th-ranked Spaniard in May and helped guide him to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Verdasco squandered a service-break lead in the final set of his semifinal match Saturday, but he managed to recover and break Dimitrov's serve for the fourth time to clinch the victory.
The Madrid native will try to become the eighth Spaniard in the last 12 years to capture the Bastad title when he squares off Sunday against Berlocq, who defeated the Netherland's Thiemo De Bakker 7-5, 6-3 in Saturday's other semifinal. EFE
