British Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton snagged pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix, the eighth race of the 2013 Formula One season, while Spain's Fernando Alonso, who drives for Ferrari, will start on the fifth row after recording the 10th best time in Saturday's qualifying runs.

Hamilton covered the 5.89-kilometer (3.67-mile) Silverstone Circuit in 1:29.607, while his German teammate, Nico Rosberg, finished second with a time of 1:30.059.

German Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel, the three-time defending champion and 2013 points leader by a wide margin, will start on the second row after posting a time of 1:30.211.

He will be joined by Australian teammate Mark Webber, who announced this week that he would be leaving Formula One at the end of the 2013 season.

Alonso, who registered a disappointing time of 1:30.979, will be joined on the fifth row by Finnish Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen, who finished ninth in the qualifying. EFE
