Six members of Spain's national soccer squad said cash amounts of up to 1,000 euros ($1,321) were stolen from their hotel rooms during their stay in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife, where La Roja played its first match of the FIFA Confederations Cup.
After Spain's 2-1 Group B victory Sunday over Uruguay, several players complained that money had gone missing from their rooms in Recife's Hotel Golden Tulip, where they had been staying since arriving in Brazil, spokespersons for the team told Efe.
The six players who filed the complaint had left the money out in the open in their wallets or in envelopes, while their teammates had kept their cash in safety deposit boxes or hidden in their luggage.
Defenseman Gerard Pique noticed the theft and lodged a complaint, delaying the team's transfer to the airport for a flight to Rio de Janeiro. EFE
