German Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel has grabbed pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, the seventh race of the Formula One season, while Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who drives for Ferrari, will start sixth.

Vettel, the three-time defending Formula One champion and the leader of this season's drivers' standings, notched the ninth pole of his career by covering the 4.36-kilometer (2.71-mile) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1:25.425 during Saturday's qualifying session.

Britain's Lewis Hamilton will join him on the front row in Montreal after posting a time of 1:25.512 on a track that was wet due to intermittent rain.

Alonso will start on the third row Sunday after completing his lap in 1:26.504 and will line up alongside Australian Red Bull driver Mark Webber, who took fifth.

Finnish Williams driver Valteri Bottas finished a surprising third in Saturday's qualifying and will be joined on the second row by German's Nico Rosberg, who drives for Mercedes. EFE
