With goals by Argentine Nicolas Bertolo and Javier Orozco, Cruz Azul defeated Queretaro on the road 2-1 in the 13th week of Mexico's Clausura soccer tourney, while America and Puebla battled to a 1-1 draw.

With the win, Cruz Azul revived its hopes of making it into the playoffs, where the eight top teams in the league will vie for the title.

The home team's Diego de la Torre opened the scoring in the 11th minute and Bertolo knocked in the tying tally in minute 48, while Orozco, from Mexico, put the final touch on the match in the 72nd minute.

Cruz Azul thus stands with 17 points and is knocking on the door of the playoffs.

In the tie between America and Puebla in the Azteca stadium, it was the latter's Felix Borja who got the team on the board first in the 62nd minute, while Miguel Layun answered back for America in the 72nd minute for the tie.

With the draw, America has 25 points and is in third place behind Tigres and Atlas, but Puebla is in 14th place with just 15 points.

The week of soccer action began Friday with Chiapas defeating Guadalajara 3-2, although the latter dominated the match possessing the ball 60 percent of the time and firing 17 shots on goal to Chiapas' 12. Chiapas went on the board first in minute 9 on a left-footer by Luis Rey, and 20 minutes later teammate Luis Lorona also knocked in a left-footer.

Then it was Guadalajara's turn with Rafael Marquez Lugo scoring twice, once in minute 45+1 and once in the 65th minute to tie things up, but Franco Arizala came through for Chiapas in the 81st minute with another tally for the win.

Also on Saturday, Pumas UNAM, in 5th place in the standings with 20 points, beat Pachuca 2-1 on goals by Efrain Velarde in the 53rd minute and Javier Cortes Granados in the 84th. Pachuca's goal was scored by Paulo Da Silva in the 56th minute.

It was a series of three scoreless draws in other Saturday action, with Tigres and Leon battling to a null result and Atlas and Morelia facing off. The teams appeared fairly evenly matched in both games, although Atlas committed 15 fouls to Morelia's 9.

Another scoreless draw was the result in the Tijuana-Santos match, but at least Tijuana attempted 24 shots on goal whereas Santos only tried 4.

Tigres - coached by Brazil's Ricardo Ferretti - is in first place now with 29 points, followed by Atlas with 27, America in 3rd with 25, Santos in 4th place with 23 and Pumas UNAM in 5th with 20.

Facing off on Sunday evening are Toluca and Monterrey and the two cellar teams Atlante and San Luis. EFE
