Ecuador's Christian Benitez scored three goals on the weekend, leading America to a resounding victory over Cruz Azul in the ninth week of Mexico's Clausura 2013 soccer tournament.

Benitez, who had tallied three goals in the previous eight matches, scored twice on headers and once on a shot from outside the area in the 22nd, 41st and 69th minutes in the match in the capital's Azteca stadium.

Queretaro notched its second win of the tourney - a 1-0 victory over Monterrey - thanks to the first goal scored in Mexico by Colombia's Wilberto Cosme Mosquera in the 3rd minute of play in the Corregidora stadium.

Chiapas fell 1-3 to Santos on Friday in the week's opening match, and Morelia's substitute striker Carlos Ochoa found the twine in extra time to steal victory from undefeated UANL Tigres and notch the 1-1 tie.

Tigres went ahead before the break on Saturday on a free kick by Lucas Lobos, but Ochoa came in in the closing seconds of the match to secure the tie, thus cutting Tigres' lead to 1 point at 21 with second-placed Atlas, which has 20. America has 19 points at this juncture after its win.

Meanwhile on Saturday, Atlas downed Tijuana 1-0, Pachuca beat San Luis 2-1 and Puebla won its match against Leon 1-0.

And on Sunday, Pumas UNAM and Guadalajara battled to a 1-1 tie, while Atlante and Toluca face off at 7 p.m. EST. EFE
