Russia's Maria Sharapova, the No. 2 seed, beat countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday and advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open.

Sharapova, who won the title in Melbourne in 2008 and has been a finalist on two other occasions, had little trouble with Makarova, who she has never lost to.

Makarova was able to get to 2-2 in both sets and was then dominated by Sharapova.

Sharapova, who has only lost nine games on her way to the semifinals, will play China's Li Na for a spot in the final.

Li upset Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. EFE
