Colombian pop star Shakira and FC Barcelona defenseman Gerard Pique, who are expecting their first child in the coming days, said they have organized an online "baby shower" to help underprivileged children around the world.

The couple on Wednesday invited their friends and fans to participate in the charity drive, Unicef said in a statement.

"As you all know, we will soon be welcoming our first child into the world, and to celebrate his birth, we've organized a virtual baby shower in association with Unicef," Shakira, a Unicef goodwill ambassador, and the soccer star said in a video message.

"In lieu of receiving gifts for our baby, as with a traditional shower, we would like to offer support for babies who live in conditions of extreme poverty throughout the world."

A "virtual living room" has been set up where well-wishers can learn about easily preventable and treatable childhood diseases and purchase items such as mosquito nets and therapeutic food for distribution to vulnerable and malnourished children.

Those making donations will receive a personalized thank-you note from the couple. EFE
