Noe Hernandez, who won a silver medal in race walking at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, is listed in serious condition after being shot over the weekend at a nightclub in central Mexico, police said.
Two other people died in Sunday's attack, police said.
The 34-year-old Hernandez serves as sports secretary of the executive committee of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, in Mexico state, which surrounds the Federal District and forms part of the Mexico City metropolitan area.
He was shot at a nightclub in Los Reyes La Paz, a city located about 30 kilometers (nearly 19 miles) from the Mexican capital.
The shooting left two people, including Hernandez, wounded, police said. EFE
