Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Paris Saint Germain, Arsenal and Schalke 04 are headed to the Champions League knockout stage after Wednesday's group matches.

Two other clubs that were already assured of advancing, Champions League newcomer Malaga and Porto, secured a lock on first place in Group C and Group A, respectively.

With one match left in the group stage, 13 of the 16 berths in the next round are set.

All Real Madrid needed from Wednesday's away clash with Manchester City was 1 point and the Spanish club might have picked up 3 if not for Karim Benzama's red card in the 73rd minute and Kun Agüero's conversion on the penalty kick, knotting the match at 1-1.

Borussia Dortmund surged ahead of Real to claim first place in Group D, routing Ajax Amsterdam 4-1 on the road.

Malaga's 2-2 tie with Zenit St. Petersburg was enough to ensure the Spanish club's first-place finish in Group C, while AC Milan took second with a 3-1 triumph over Anderlecht in Brussels.

PSG topped Dynamo Kiev 2-0 and claimed the second slot in Group A, behind Porto, who inflicted a 3-0 pasting on Dinamo Zagreb.

In Group B, both Schalke 04 and Arsenal will advance, but the order of the finish won't be settled until the final match of group play.

The German team beat winless Montpellier 2-0 and Arsenal edged Olympiakos Piraeus 1-0. EFE
