The New York Mets exercised their 2013 option on All-Star third baseman David Wright for $16 million.
The Mets had only three days after the conclusion of this year's World Series, which ended Sunday night, to exercise their option on the 29-year-old slugger.
According to sources close to the negotiations, the Mets intend to sign Wright to a multi-year contract extension, but since a deal is still not close at hand they exercised the option to buy time.
Wright hit .306 last year with 21 home runs and 93 RBI and was an All Star for the sixth time. EFE
