Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro defeated Switzerland's Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) on Sunday to win the Swiss Indoors title in Basel for the first time.

Del Potro won the 13th title of his career and denied Federer, who was playing in his 9th final in his hometown tournament, the victory.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic beat the Swiss great in Basel in 2009 and Britain's Tim Henman pulled off the same feat back in 2001 before Federer started his run to tennis greatness.

"You deserved to win," Federer said. "It was a very even match."

"We await you in Buenos Aires," Del Potro said, referring to the Swiss great's Dec. 12 exhibition in the Argentine capital.

Federer, who has won 17th Grand Slam titles, is ranked No. 1 in the world. EFE
