SUNDERLAND, England (AP) – Steven Fletcher scored his fifth Premier League goal in as many games Saturday as Sunderland secured its first victory of the season, a 1-0 win over Wigan at the Stadium of Light.
After a scoreless first half, Wigan was reduced to 10 men early in the second when Jordi Gomez was sent off in the 48th minute. Fletcher struck three minutes later when he turned a ball from James McClean into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The Scottish forward, who joined Sunderland from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the offseason, has scored all five of Sunderland's goals this campaign.
The defeat condemns Wigan to its worst start to a top-flight season with the club on four points from six games.
