Spain's David Cal won the silver medal in the men's canoe sprint C1 1000m at the London Olympic Games on Wednesday.

This was Cal's third Olympic medal, having won one each in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008, and with the medal he secured on Wednesday he becomes the Spanish athlete with the most Olympic awards.

The gold medal went to Germany's Sebastian Brendel and the silver went to Canadian Mark Oldershaw.

Spain has now won seven medals at the London Games. Marina Alabau won the gold in windsurfing; swimmer Mireia Belmonte took silvers in the 200 butterfly and 800 freestyle; Javier Gomez Noya won a silver in the triathlon and Ona Carbonell and Andrea Fuentes took a silver in synchronized swimming, and Maialen Chourraut won a bronze in the K-1 kayak competition.
