Argentina lived up to expectations and defeated Nigeria 93-79 in the Olympic basketball tournament, taking control of first place in Group A.
The Argentine team's next opponent will be the United States, the defending Olympic champion.
Coach Julio Cesar Lamas's team beat Nigeria Saturday night with superior shooting, posting 70 percent field goal percentages during some stretches of the game.
The game against Team USA is "going to be a particularly tough one," Lamas told Efe. "We have two goals. First, to compete, for which you have to set the pace that suits you. If we do that, we'll think about winning. That's the initial plan. Our decisions later will be based on what happens."
The Argentines found the holes in Nigeria's defense, managing 18 assists in the first 20 minutes of play.
Nigeria responded with excellent three-point shooting, but it was not enough to hold back the Argentines.
Argentina focused on controlling the clock in the last quarter, setting up shots and avoiding turnovers. EFE
