Colombian Yuri Alvear won an Olympic bronze medal Wednesday in the 70-kilogram class of women's judo after dominating her bout with China's Chen Fei.

The 2009 middleweight world champion lost in the quarterfinals of the main draw to France's Lucie Decosse, the heavy favorite for the gold, but she defeated Slovenia's Rasa Sraka and Chen in the consolation bracket to claim a podium spot.

At the conclusion of the five-minute contest, a teary Alvear dropped to the mat inside the ExCeL London arena as a score of friends and supporters chanted her name from the stands.

"I want to thank God for allowing me to get this far and win this bronze medal for Colombia. I'd left it all in his hands and he gave me the strength to achieve this," Alvear said after the bronze-medal match.

Alvear was very solid throughout the competition, making just one mistake in the quarterfinals when Decosse stunned her with a match-ending ippon just 10 seconds into the contest.

The Colombian cried in the locker room after that defeat but regained her composure to fight two nearly perfect bouts to claim her country's third medal at the London Games and 14th Olympic medal overall. EFE
