Brazil advanced to the 2012 Olympic men's soccer quarterfinals on Wednesday with a 3-0 defeat of New Zealand in the northeastern city of Newcastle.

The completely overmatched New Zealand squad gave up two goals in the first half hour and a third in the opening minutes of the second half.

Brazil's next opponent will be Honduras, making its first-ever appearance in the Olympic quarterfinals after a scoreless tie with Japan on Wednesday in a match played at Coventry.

In Cardiff, meanwhile, Mexico needed only a single goal to beat Switzerland. That result, combined with a 0-0 draw between South Korea and Gabon, set up the Mexicans for a quarterfinal clash with Senegal.

The other quarterfinal matchups will feature Japan against Egypt and host nation Britain against South Korea. EFE
