Watford has appointed Gianfranco Zola as its new manager after the League Championship club's new Italian owners sacked Sean Dyche.

Watford, which plays in the division below the Premier League, says the 46-year-old former Italian international and West Ham manager joined on a two-year contract.

Technical director Gianluca Nani said Saturday that ''I think Watford's fans can expect an exciting and attacking style from his team. Gianfranco represents this project perfectly.''

Dyche was in charge for a year and guided Watford to 11th in the second-tier league last season. He was fired after the the Pozzo family - which also owns Italian side Udinese and Granada in Spain - completed its takeover of Watford last weekend.

Zola has been out of work since being sacked by West Ham in 2010.
