Netherlands soccer coach Bert van Marwijk has resigned after the team's surprising group- stage loss in the European Championship.

The Dutch federation said in a statement late Wednesday that the contract that linked Van Marwijk to the Oranje to 2016 was ended ''with immediate effect.''

The Dutch lost all three group games to Germany, Portugal and Denmark, after they entered the tournament with the clear ambition of lifting the cup.

Van Marwijk largely stuck with the team that lost the World Cup final to Spain in extra time two years ago.
