Lyon's hopes of a top-three finish and Champions League football took a huge hit on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at home to relegation battlers Brest.

Yoann Gourcuff gave Les Gones a first-half lead but Brest snatched a point through Gregory Lorenzi's equaliser.

The result leaves Lyon eight points behind third-placed Lille, who will assure themselves of a top-three finish if they beat Caen tomorrow.

The home side began strongly and visiting goalkeeper Steeve Elana did well to palm away a powerful drive on target from Alexandre Lacazette.

Gourcuff then supplied a cross to Bafetimbi Gomis, who saw his header smothered on the line by Elana.

The Brest goalkeeper made it a hat-trick of excellent saves on the half-hour mark, using his legs to keep out a close-range shot from Gomis.

Brest had not had a look-in so far, but made their presence felt after 35 minutes when Bruno Grougi's powerful strike crashed on to the post.

However, Lyon were in front a minute later. Mouhamadou Dabo raced down the left before whipping in a cross which was converted with a diving header from Gourcuff.

Lisandro Lopez could have added two more before the interval for Les Gones, but Elana kept the scoreline respectable.

Lyon continued to create chances in the second half as Gomis fired wide from Alexandre Lacazette's cross.

Lacazette then missed a golden chance to score a second, firing straight at Elana with only the keeper to beat.

And Brest made the most of the let-off with an equaliser after 75 minutes when Adama Ba's flick-on was turned in at the near post by Lorenzi.
