Barcelona striker Lionel Messi is only one goal shy of equaling, and two shy of breaking, the all-time goal record for Barcelona FC after a careful review of current holder César Rodríguez's club goal tally by La Vanguardia newspaper turned up 232 goals, not the 235 previously cited.
César's record has stood for 57 years according to Barcelona.
Messi has 231 goals so far for the club and the Argentina forward can match or break the mark in Tuesday's Spanish league game against Granada.
Barcelona says the study analyzed and compared all match reports from Cesar's Barcelona career with La Vanguardia's database.
Messi, the three-time world player of the year, has 51 goals in all competitions this season.

Brazil's FIFA Chief Resigns
Brazil's corruption-tainted former soccer boss Ricardo Teixeira resigned from the FIFA Executive Committee on Monday citing personal reasons, a week after stepping down as head of his country's soccer federation.
Teixeira, who had served as a member of world soccer's governing body since 1994, said his resignation was "irrevocable," in a letter to the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) published on its website.
He did not elaborate on what the personal reasons were.
"I have worked with determination to defend the interests of football on our continent and to elevate football in the international context," he said.
Teixeira has also resigned from the committee organizing the 2014 World Cup at a time when Brazil is struggling to prepare to host the world's most-watched sporting event, AFP reported.
His 22-year stewardship of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) was marred by controversy, with repeated calls for his resignation and allegations of irregularities in Brazil and abroad.
Teixeira, 64, allegedly took millions of dollars worth of bribes in the 1990s from the Switzerland-based ISL sports marketing company that later went bankrupt.
He was also accused of diverting public funds from a friendly match played by Brazil in 2008.
