Gold Coast United have suspended coach Miron Bleiberg indefinitely after he criticized the club's decision to install teenager Mitch Cooper as captain in his A-League debut.

United's billionaire owner Clive Palmer made the unusual move to hand pick 17-year-old Cooper as stand-in captain for suspended Michael Thwaite in Friday's match against Melbourne Heart.

Bleiberg said Cooper's elevation to the captaincy was only ''ceremonial'' and he would not be the on-pitch leader.

United chief executive Clive Mensink said the club took the decision to appoint Cooper seriously and were unhappy with Bleiberg's comments.
