Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben scored as Bayern Munich preserved their place at the top of the Bundesliga with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Wolfsburg.

Bayern had to wait an hour before Gomez made the breakthrough against a well-organized Wolfsburg side at the Allianz Arena.

Wolfsburg responded well after going behind, but were unable to find an equalizer as Bayern held on before adding the second in stoppage time through Robben.

Bayern were looking to bounce back from their defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, while Wolfsburg were intent on making life difficult for them.

Felix Magath's visiting side defended resolutely, frustrating their hosts in the first half and trying to force them into mistakes.

Bayern did find a few gaps in the Wolfsburg defense, but when they did have the ball in the back of the net through Gomez in the seventh minute, the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.

Philipp Lahm committed one of the mistakes Wolfsburg were hoping for, but Ashkan Dejagah was unable to take full advantage as he pulled his shot wide of the far post after intercepting the Bayern captain's pass back to Manuel Neuer.

Gomez was not offside when he collected the ball in the 19th minute, but he never really brought it under control and Diego Benaglio came out to clear.

Thomas Muller lost his balance when he was put through, but he did not even make it into the penalty area before crashing to the ground.

The last chance of the half fell to Mario Mandzukic from another Bayern mistake, this time from Bastian Schweinsteiger who made amends by blocking the Wolfsburg striker's shot after heading the ball to him.

Wolfsburg's resistance was broken after an hour when Gomez put Bayern in front, sweeping the ball in from six yards after his own header was blocked.

The visitors changed their tactics and the flow of the game changed as the visitors attacked, with Bayern reverting to a defensive, counter-attacking style.

Bayern nearly got a second goal on the break in the 80th minute when Toni Kroos set up Franck Ribery, but Benaglio pushed his shot wide of the post.

Robben then scored a somewhat fortunate second with time running out as Ivica Olic's lobbed shot was cleared off the line by Felipe Lopes, but the ball hit Robben in the midriff and cannoned in.
