BREMEN, Germany (AP) – Bundesliga side Werder Bremen says it has banned a member of the far-right extremist National Democratic Party (NPD) from the club.
Werder said in a statement Friday that it rejected an appeal from Jens Puehse against his ban following an earlier ruling by the club president.
Werder fan Puehse became a member of the club in January. He was informed he was being thrown out in May because of his political activity.
Werder president Klaus-Dieter Fischer said, ''With this decision the club is making a clear statement against right-wing extremism.''
The NPD has experienced a backlash in the last month after a small group of neo-Nazis were accused of killing at least nine people across the country over several years.
