ALICANTE, Spain (AP) – David Silva scored twice and provided on David Villa's 50th goal for Spain as the defending champions denied Scotland a playoff place for next year's European Championship with a 3-1 win on Tuesday.
Scotland's loss allowed the Czech Republic to overtake it and finish second in Group I after it beat Lithuania 4-1. Scotland needed to match the Czech's result to clinch a spot in next month's playoff for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine.
World Cup champion Spain has won 14 straight competitive matches and finished Group I perfect after an eighth straight victory.
Silva scored in the sixth and 44th minutes and fed Villa in the 54th.
David Goodwillie scored a consolation goal for Scotland with a 66th-minute penalty.
