Craig Mackail-Smith scored a first-half header for Scotland to beat Liechtenstein 1-0 on Saturday and keep its chances of qualifying for next year's European Championship alive.

Mackail-Smith rewarded coach Craig Levein's decision to hand the Scottish striker his first start by heading Phil Bardsley's cross into goal in the 32nd-minute at the Rheinpark Stadion.

Scotland moved into second place in Group I, one point ahead of the Czech Republic.

It must now win its final match away against title holder and World Cup champion Spain on Tuesday to secure its place in the playoff for next year's tournament in Poland and Ukraine or wait on the Czechs' result at Lithuania.
