FREIBURG, Germany (AP) – Bundesliga side Freiburg says it has signed former Germany defender Andreas Hinkel on a free transfer.
Freiburg said the 29-year-old Hinkel - who has been without a club since leaving Celtic in the summer - trained for the first time with the club Thursday. No contract details were revealed.
German news agency dapd said Hinkel has signed a deal for one season, with the option to extend the contract based on his performances.
Hinkel said ''it's great to be able to play again in the Bundesliga with such a well-managed side like Freiburg.''
Hinkel was capped 21 times for Germany. He played for three seasons at Celtic, after spells with Sevilla in Spain and Bundesliga side Stuttgart.
