Ecuadorian giants Liga Deportiva Universitaria took a big step towards the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals as they defeated Argentina's Independiente 2-0 in the first leg of the round of 16.

Independiente boss Ramon Diaz decided to field a mix of usual starters and some replacements and they paid the price against a strong Liga side.

Paul Ambrossi opened the scoring for Liga three minutes before the interval, after some fine individual play by Hernan Barcos.

In the 52nd minute, Luis Bolanos widened the gap after combining with Ambrossi.

The second leg will be played on October 12, giving Independiente time to recover the tie.

"Victory was the most important thing and thank God, we won,'' Barcos told Fox Sports.

"It was not easy at all, as Independiente put eight or nine defensive men on the field.''

Independiente defender Leonel Galeano added: "We were ordered in defence, but

we should have been ordered and worked well with the ball too.''

"I hope in the return match we can win.''
