SAO PAULO (AP) – The Brazilian football federation says striker Fred will not play in Brazil's friendly against Argentina on Wednesday because of a muscle injury in his right thigh.
The federations says Fred was released from the squad after examinations on Tuesday showed the injury would rule him out of the match in Cordoba.
Fred reported for duty with pain in his right thigh following a Brazilian league match on Sunday, when he scored the winner in Fluminense's 1-0 victory over leader Corinthians.
Brazil is playing South American rival Argentina twice this month in what is being called the America's Superclassic series.
The next match is Sept. 28 in the northern Brazilian city of Belem.
Both teams will only feature players from local clubs.
