United States midfielder Stuart Holden played for Bolton's reserve team Tuesday, his first action since injuring his left knee in March.

The 26-year-old Holden played most of Bolton's 7-0 loss to Fulham's reserves in London.

He tweeted: ''The hard work has paid off!! ... Came through the 80 mins in good health! BACK in the game!''

Holden has been out since getting 26 stitches in his left knee following a challenge by Manchester United defender Jonny Evans in a Barclays Premier League match.

Bolton's next Premier League match is against Manchester United, the defending league champions set to visit the Reebok on Saturday, September 10.

Holden was one of Bolton's most consistent contributors during the Trotters' successful run into the top half of the Premier League during the first part of the 2010-11 season. After Holden's injury, Bolton struggled, falling to 14th place while losing their last five matches.
