Hoffenheim says police used pepper spray to control Werder Bremen fans after stewards were attacked during the interval of their Bundesliga game on Saturday.

The top-tier German club said in a statement on Sunday that stewards were trying to reach a fan who ignited a smoke bomb in the stands when they were ''attacked with sticks and pelted with beer cups by Bremen supporters.''

Hoffenheim says the police used pepper spray but ''luckily no one was injured in the incident.''

Bremen said on its website Saturday that 30 fans were lightly injured.

Bremen won 2-1.

Hoffenheim apologized last week after a high-frequency loudspeaker was used to drown out singing by Borussia Dortmund's fans.
