Massimo Ficcadenti has been presented as Cagliari's new coach after Roberto Donadoni was fired two weeks before the start of the Serie A season.

Ficcadenti, who signed a two-year contract, says the Sardinian club has the potential to do more than simply avoid relegation, having finished 14th last season.

Donadoni, who coached Italy at the 2008 European Championship, had taken over as Cagliari manager 12 matches into last season, but his relationship with club president Massimo Cellino soured, eventually leading to his departure.

Last season, Ficcadenti led Cesena to a 15th-place finish in its first Serie A campaign in 20 years.

It's the seventh time a coach has been fired before the start of the Italian season.
