PARIS (AP) – Sochaux forward Modibo Maiga says Newcastle wants to sign him, and he is pressuring his club president to start negotiating with the English Premier League club.
Maiga did not turn up for Saturday's league match against Caen, and then skipped training on Sunday in a bid to force the move. He has asked club president Alexandre Lacombe to sell him.
The Mali forward, who scored 15 league goals for Sochaux last season, says in Monday's edition of sports daily L'Equipe that ''they (Newcastle) want me to come and it's not just any old club'' and that ''the president has to discuss my transfer.''
L'Equipe says Newcastle has offered ?8 million ($11.5 million) for the 24-year-old Maiga on a five-year deal.
