The management company for Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel says the Nigerian's father has been abducted.

London-based Sport Entertainment & Media Group says Michael Obi was taken in Nigeria on Friday and ''thus far no ransom has been received.''

SEM says Mikel was told ahead of Sunday's Premier League season opener against Stoke but ''decided to play so as not to let down his team and family.''

SEM says Chelsea is looking at ''security issues'' surrounding Mikel.
