LONDON (AP) – The English Football Association has charged Arsenal and Newcastle with failing to control their players in Saturday's Premier League opener.
The FA says the ''clubs have been charged following a mass confrontation of players'' after Arsenal striker Gervinho was sent off.
The Gunners are appealing Gervinho's dismissal for slapping Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton to avoid an automatic three-match ban.
Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has also been charged with violent conduct after stamping on Barton.
Both clubs have until Thursday to respond to the charges.
