LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) – Goalkeeper Bernd Leno will join Bayer Leverkusen on loan from Stuttgart after a poor start by last season's Bundesliga runner-up.
Leverkusen says that the two clubs agreed on a loan deal for the 19-year-old Leno through Dec. 31.
Leverkusen's regular No. 1, Germany goalkeeper Rene Adler, is out with a knee injury. The performances of his backups - David Yelldell and Fabian Giefer - have drawn criticism.
The club was knocked out of the German Cup in the first round by Dynamo Dresden, giving up a 3-0 lead to lose 4-3 in extra time. It then lost 2-0 to Mainz in its opening Bundesliga match last weekend.
