SANTA CLARA, California (AP) – West Bromwich Albion conceded a bizarre goal in losing 2-1 to the San Jose Earthquakes in a friendly on Tuesday.
San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham scored from more than 90 yards out, embarrassing his oppositite number Boaz Myhill in the West Brom goal.
The 21-year-old Bingham collected a ball in the area and sent a long goalkick downfield. It bounced over the head of Myhill and took another bounce before nestling in the net.
Myhill - taking the gloves for West Brom after the departure of Scott Carson to Turkey in the offseason - was staring directly into a setting sun at Buck Shaw Stadium without the benefit of a cap.
The freak goal came in just the third minute of the game. Khari Stephenson made it 2-0 to San Jose just before halftime before Jerome Thomas pulled a goal back for Albion in the 53rd.
